Did you try feeding the male? or you prefer not to give food not to jeopardise water quality?
Infact this is a debatable issue with regards to feeding the male while guarding the spawn. It's a bit of a double edged issue since both feeding and not feeding could prove in losing the spawn. I have not fed my male up to now. He has been guarding the eggs for two days now, incessantly moving nests and doing an amazing job. Most plakat breeders say that one should not feed while this process is still ongoing, given that the male is too busy guarding and doing his job. If fed, he might reject the food and just leave it there, and this would only spoil water quality. Considering that filter is switched off, and there is neither water movement nor filtration to at least help food particles get caught in the filter, it would only cause the water to be spoilt. One way out of it is to try to feed at least one or two granules (I feed my plakats with Atisons granules) and if he does not eat them, one can just remove them slowly. Still, this could be hazardous to both the spawn and the nest. The bubble nest could be lost with any water movement and the male, seeing this happening, will only instinctively reject to pursue his guarding in an unsafe space, thus resulting in him eating the eggs. Although this is rare, it has been recorded. In my case, I think I will leave the male at it, not feed him for at least tomorrow until the eggs hatch, and then try to feed him a couple of granules and see what happens. Guess it's up to analyzing the situation and take the best opportunity to try to feed him. I will obviously record this event later on in the following days.

Don't think you should risk feeding him at all for now. Fish can fast for up to a week easily, sometimes more.

@Foxy - I'm of the same reasoning, I rather let him finish a job well done and feed after since he was fed very well before and surely wont die starved for a couple of days.@efesu -

Did the eggs hatch tinkerbell? Because betta fry hatch after 24 to 36 hrs maximum. Did the eggs turn grey?

UPDATEChampagne anyone? The eggs have all hatched. 26.11.09 - Female introduced in tank. 27.11.09 - Pair bred, female netted out. 29.11.09 - Eggs hatched, fry clinging to bubble nest. Tinkerbell is a very happy fairy. All the eggs have hatched and I was amazed to see little white specks with two needle point black eyes darting a distance of not more than 1cm here and there. There father is a disciplinarian....he's picking up his bratty fry and re-attaching them to the nest...and this is all the time. The male has not stopped for a second. Very dedicated!! Here are some photos for everyone's enjoyment. Father with fry.

Chin Chin tinkerbell... Very well done!Just as a matter of fact cause i am sure that you know your hw... from this time onwards, make sure that you keep the aquarium covered to provide an equilibrium between air temperature and water temperature. Bettas will in some time start developing the labyrinth organ and a difference in temperature may lead to problems in fish health. Proset and cheers tinkerbell! Great photos too.

Hi ramsvella and thanks for your comments :) Thanks for the advice, very true what you highlighted about change in temperature. Several plakat breeders use the plastic sheet covering method, however my Nano tank comes with a lid incorporated which is much better as heat is retained all through the tank and no temperature changes are caused. quote:

Thanks king, I hope there will be more interested subjects to document about, especially if I do really get lucky and the get most of the spawn to mature. Colours and finnage are a most interested subject to discuss in the future on this thread. quote:

Thanks vera, much appreciated :) There will be more hard work now to keep the little fry well fed and their stomachs full with food. Wow re. Sparkling gouramis, 2 weeks is surely a lot of time and patience for the male. Plakat males will only feed on the fry since when they are free swimming, they would be invading his territory, offspring or not! Ehhh...nature and its ways! quote:

He he Foxy, thanks for your comment. Right now they're all the same :) Little white transparent beings not more than 2mm's in length with part of the egg they hatched from still stuck to them for life support. Guess you are a little teeny bit early to choose !
