Amongst the daily junk mail, I got this which I thought is worth sharing -Il-bram Portugiz jintlemah fl-ibhra Maltin Fost l-ohrajn kien hemm min informa lil tal-gazzetti illi fid-9 ta Marzu 2009 intlemah il-bram portugiz faccata tal-gzejjer ta' San Pa wl il-Bahar. Dawn in-nies qalu, " Waqt li t-tfal kienu qeghdin jilaghbu bil-kopp qabdu wahda minn dawn il-bram. Ahna ma konniex nafu x'inhi ghax veru stramba, hsibniha xi baskett tal-plastik gozz. Avzaw lil Maltin kollha sabiex joqghodu attenti ghax diga waslu Malta. B'dan l-email qeghdin inwissu biex hadd m'ghandu jmiss ma dan il-bram anke jekk jahseb li huma mejta jew ittellghu fuq l-art mill-mewg, ghax it-tentakoli taghhom ikun ghad fihom il-velenu. Wiehed jista jitratta tingiz b'ilma mielah u japplika is-silg biex inaqqas l-ugigh. Azzjoni immedjata ghandha tittiehed jekk persuna tibda tbati biex tiehu in-nifs jew thossha storduta. Din mhiex cajta! Periklu kbir li tista titlef hajtek! Dan l-email ghandu jinxtered ma Malta kollha fi zmien qasir! Grazzi ............................. In fact on a fishing forum, it is said that such sightings have been confirmed. This has recently been filmed off Gibraltar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc7IQWC5XB4

indeed mark. Diving is not a problem. Jelly fish can t sting through wetsuits.Actually I hope to see at least a couple of them as I have never seen them live.. they are quite a view when diving. Thanks for worrying for my health though :P

As Nihon said, jelly fish are not a problem for divers, in fact they are quite a beautiful sight underwater.

these jellies are one of the most poisonous one after the box jelly fish. this type of jelly fish does not sink or swim under water infact it can contract its mussels and act like a sail so it is driven by the wind , so it is very rare to see this type of jelly fish on shore cause of its ability. I never cam acros these scary creatures and already went to swim couple of times and I would began to pay some attention for these creatures before I will dive LOL

The only resources we've got in Malta are sun 'n sea. Such combination plays an important factor to the tourism sector. Will the jellyfish curse be another spin to shake our economy? Why all these jellies in the Mediterranean? Is this a result of overfishing? Tuna and turtles, maybe? Is this due to climate change? Higher temperatures results in higher salinity near the coast. Fresh water rivers are emptying less into the Med as river beds dry up. As a result, we see even more jellyfish around in shallow waters. Can we contribute in any way? I believe, to a certain extent, we can! By eating less fish we preserve fish stocks that in turn devour jellyfish. By freeing and protecting turtles and other creatures, we ensure the sustainability of life-cycles. By keeping the sea clean & free from plastics or old nets that would otherwise choke and drown hundreds of sea-life, we ascertain a realistic future for the Mediterranean. Every bit helps. EVERYONE IS RESPONSIBLE. EVERYONE CAN HELP.

..or maybe its something that triggers their reproduction(Temperature, threat)and they look for shelter in shallow waters , like in Japanese waters they have invasion of huge jellyfish and scintist discovered that as soon as jellyfish is cut to be killed it releases eggs and reproduces countless..VERA

John I think that the decline of turtles and dolphins and other sea creatures that feed on these jelly fish is one of the main reasons but in that article if I remember correctly there was mention of climate change affecting sea temperatures as well spurring these jellyfish to migrate to other seas where temperatures is more agreeable to them....whatever the reason we're in for a very hot summer with poor swimming conditions 5-6" bala shark and common pleco to give away for free. pm if interested.

Divers usually have much of their faces exposed even with a wetsuit. Tentacles are very long. The main body is at the surface and may not be seen at depth. Swimming at the surface is probably safer as the float is readily visible. A hit on the face is not something I would relish when diving - So I would not feel too cocky about my wetsuit.
